college), a predecessor to San Diego State University which was located just adjacent to University Heights in 1899. The former school building is now the Eugene Brucker Education Center which serves as the central office for the San Diego Unified School District. During the founding of San Diego, Normal Heights was covered in brush and populated by rabbits. It eventually had a few farms but development was halted due to a lack of water. Land development companies were interested in the area and as a result, a water reservoir was built in 1905 in University Heights. The number of buildings in Normal Heights increased from one in January of 1906 to 43 by December of the same year. This is when the community was officially founded.

A trolley barn was built in 1913 and thus the Adams Avenue Operating Division was established in 1915. In 1911, residents established the Normal Heights Improvement Association which built a county library, school and paved roads and sidewalks. The business district of Adam’s Avenue was developed in the 1920’s. Today, Normal Heights thrives with business, single family homes and condos/townhouses filled with a diverse population.
