Pacific Beach’s history began during its development in the late 1800’s during the completion of the cross-country railroad. It was originally named Bay Point, and then later changed to Pacific Beach. P.B. (as known by locals), stretches from the Mission Bay jetty to the cliffs in La Jolla and is inhabited by young professionals, college students, and families. This beach town features exciting nightlife and bars, tons of food options, parks, community events, outdoor activities, and a relaxing beach with a boardwalk that stretches from Mission Beach. Outdoor Activities in Pacific Beach
Following the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Pacific Beach is a great place to live for any beachgoer or outdoor enthusiast. Pacific Beach is a prime location for surfers with easy access to Tourmaline Surfing Park at the northern end of Pacific Beach. This is one of the top surfing spots in San Diego. Pacific Beach also shares the northern part of Mission Bay, which is a great spot for paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skiing, wakeboarding, and for doing other water sports.
If watersports aren’t for you, P.B. is also a wonderful place for people who love walking, running, rollerblading, or bicycling, which they can do along the boardwalk that stretches 3.2 miles. P.B. is also home of Crystal Pier, which is open to pedestrians during the daytime for walking or fishing.
Pacific Beach is also home to Kate Sessions Park, a large dog-friendly park with hillside views, a playground. and sports field space. There is also the Pacific Beach Recreation Center for those wanting to get involved in an assortment of community sports, activities or classes. Outdoor enthusiasts will find that Pacific Beach is a prime location to live in San Diego County.
Pacific Beach Nightlife
Along Garnet Avenue from Ingraham Street to Mission Boulevard, you will find an abundance of bars, restaurants, and clubs to make for a thriving nightlife. This area attracts a younger crowd, mostly of college age. Some of the top locations include Pacific Beach Shore club, The Duck Dive, and Moonshine Beach. The large variety of bars and clubs make it so there is a bar or club for every one of different interests. This is one of the main nightlife centers in San Diego outside of Downtown San Diego, which generally draws in an older crowd than Pacific Beach.
Restaurants in Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach offers a diverse range of restaurant options for those who love local bites. P.B. is home to the famous Baked Bear where you can make custom ice cream sandwiches, Crushed for delicious brunch and mimosa flights, or Oscar’s Mexican Seafood for fish tacos. Pacific Beach offers food of every flavor so you will never run out of restaurant options.
Pacific Beach School Districts
Public schools in Pacific Beach are part of the San Diego Unified School District. All schools rank high on greatschools.org, making this a smart location to raise children. There is one high school: Mission Bay Senior High School, one middle school: Pacific Beach Middle School, and four elementary schools: Kate Sessions Elementary, Barnard Elementary, Crown Point Elementary, and Pacific Beach Elementary. There are also several charter and private schools in the area.
