The seaside community of Point Loma has been described as “where California began”, due to it being the the site of the state’s first landing by a European explorer. This geographically-significant peninsula defines the safe harbor known as San Diego Bay. At the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula lies Cabrillo National Monument, commemorating the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay in 1542. In addition to offering great views of San Diego, this hilltop site gives visitors insight into the historical roots of the area’s first settlers, including an educational display at The Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The National Park is also a great place to see marine life in the tide pools at low tide.

As mentioned above, Liberty Station is a great place to find some of Point Loma’s best restaurants, further bolstering San Diego’s reputation as a food mecca. Other dining spots are tucked away throughout the Point Loma neighborhood, in particular ones that specialize in fresh seafood. The Bali Hai on Shelter Island is a famous venue in the tiki tradition, featuring Asian fusion cuisine and unparalleled views.

Arts & Culture in Point Loma

The Cabrillo Festival is held every September, and celebrates 16th century explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s historic first steps onto Ballast Point. The festival features folk demonstrations of dancing and art, traditional food offerings, and craft activities. See more at cabrillofestival.org

Since 1982, Humphreys Concerts By The Bay has been presenting a wide variety of major attractions at their outdoor stage. The concerts cover the full spectrum of entertainment, from rock and jazz, to comedy, blues, folk and international music.
